How Do I Get To Winter Harbour?

Winter Harbour can be accessed by road or by water!

Highway 19 is the main highway serving Vancouver Island. Head north on Hwy 19 from any major centre on the Island to connect to Port Hardy. Winter Harbour is located west of Port Hardy, using a well maintained gravel road that leads past brilliant blue lakes and emerald forests, through Holberg and on to the mouth of Quatsino Sound.

Logging trucks are active any day on the road from Port Hardy to Winter Harbour. Take care when driving these roads, and have respect for large logging trucks. Winter driving on these roads can be tricky – make sure you have good winter tires and always drive with care!

The road is maintained but it is gravel and can get bumpy after a good rainfall. Beware of potholes!  If you want to check on road conditions, this is a good site from Western Forest Products or follow them on Twitter: @WFPRoadInfo

To save the road trip, many visitors put their boats in at Coal Harbour and come down Quatsino Sound and around the corner to Winter Harbour. The boat trip is approximately 45 minutes and we can refuel you when you get here!

If you’re really adventurous, take a floatplane right into Winter Harbour!
Tofino Air offers direct charter services, Joey’s Air Cab flies from its Coal Harbour base, and Pacific Coastal offers service from Port Hardy.

Come visit us this year at the end of the road for the adventure of a lifetime.
