Winter
Harbour can be accessed by road or by water!
Located west of Port Hardy, a well maintained gravel
road leads past brilliant blue lakes and emerald forests, through
Holberg and on to Winter Harbour at the mouth of Quatsino Sound.
Highway 19 is the main highway serving Vancouver Island, and
linking Port Hardy with Victoria and all other major centers
on the island. Well maintained highways also connect other communities
in the North Island.
Logging trucks are active Monday-Friday until 6pm on the road
from Port Hardy to Winter Harbour. Take care when driving these
roads, and have respect for large logging trucks. Winter driving
on these roads can be tricky - make sure you have good winter
tires and be careful! The road is maintained but it is gravel
and can get bumpy after a good rainfall. Beware of potholes!
To save the raod trip, many visitors put their boats in at Coal
Harbour and come around the corner to Winter Harbour. The boat
trip is approximately 45 minutes and we can refuel you when
you get here!
If you're really adventurous, take a floatplane right into the
Harbour. Tofino Air offers direct charter services.
